Bridging the Gap: Integrating Fleet Management Technology into Mature Mining Operations
Large Mine, United Arab Emirates, 2021 - 2023
Successfully integrating technology into a large mining environment is never as simple as a software installation. For a mature operation running a fleet of over 100 trucks, the primary change management hurdle isn't just resolved by holding a handful of training classes —instead serious time, planning and thought needs to go into changing years of established habits and overcoming the sheer inertia of "the way we’ve always done it."
When this operation chose to implement Wenco to optimise its fleet, the leadership recognised that the technical rollout would only be as effective as the people using it. MTS was initially engaged to conduct a mining technology assessment and to put together a practical roadmap. Following on MTS were further engaged to help bridge the gap between the Wenco’s powerful capabilities and the site’s daily operational reality. Our role was to act as a catalyst for change, ensuring that the technology investment didn't just sit on a server but actually drove performance in the pit.
A Structured Approach to Change
Our team worked directly with the site’s business improvement and operational departments to execute a strategy centered on six high-impact projects. These weren't theoretical exercises; they were designed to embed the technology into the site’s DNA. The scope of work included:
Defining Benchmark KPIs: We helped the team move beyond vanity metrics to establish a "single source of truth." By defining and agreeing on clear, data-driven KPIs, we ensured everyone—from the dispatchers to the site managers—was measuring success by the same yardstick.
Bespoke Data Visualisation: Raw data is often overwhelming. We built site specific Power BI dashboards that translated Wenco’s output into actionable insights, allowing supervisors to make real-time adjustments to haul routes and equipment allocation.
Standardising Excellence: To ensure the gains weren't lost between shift changes, we developed standardised processes. This created a consistent operational "rhythm" that minimized variance and maximized fleet utilisation.
Hands-on Training: Change happens at the operator level. We delivered on-site training that focused on the why behind the technology, ensuring that teams felt empowered rather than monitored.
Quantifying Impact: Finally, we assisted the team in quantifying the financial and operational shifts, providing the data needed to prove the ROI of the change management effort.
Results and Future Readiness
The partnership yielded a 21% improvement in load and haul productivity—a significant margin for an operation of this scale. Beyond the immediate numbers, the project secured a sustained culture of technology adoption. This successful transition has now provided the operational maturity and data foundation necessary to invest in further safety and efficiency tools, such as advanced fatigue management systems.
