Migrating your mining dashboards from SAP business Objects to Power BI

While many sites struggle with manual Excel-based reporting—consuming valuable hours from engineering teams—the most efficient operations have moved toward full automation. Typically this involves harnessing cycle, fuel, haul, drilling and other data from an FMS database into PDF based reporting and dashboards. A top class mine will also integrate other data sources such as mine planning into the reporting so that there is little to no manual inputs required. This results in improved reporting accuracy, data coming from a “single source of the truth” and much more timely reporting.

Our client, a large-scale gold mining operation, needed to transition away from their site supported SAP Business Objects framework to a corporately hosted Power BI environment. Due to the fact that the day to day running of the mine was heavily reliant on the current reporting; there was a requirement for this to be a smooth, tightly co-ordinated process with a high level of QA/UAT as well as highly responsive after care.

Our Solution: Throughout 2025 and 2026, we led the end-to-end migration of the site's critical management reports. By integrating rich FMS data (cycle times, production, and fuel consumption), shift commentary via web forms, and budget/forecast targets, we developed a hybrid reporting ecosystem:

  • Interactive Power BI Dashboards: For deep-dive analysis and trend identification.

  • Paginated Reports: For "push-style" daily PDF delivery. Recognising that site personnel often prefer information delivered directly to their inbox, these automated reports ensure key data is seen without requiring a manual login.

This was a complex project as the site had over a decade of history building reports within their SAP Business Objects platform. As always with mining operations, business logic had to be applied to the reporting solutions - something that we were well positioned to do with our knowledge of mining and the source FMS data.

The Impact: The transition successfully migrated the reports to the new platform in a timely, cost effective manner and without the pain typically associated with a new system being implemented. By moving to a Microsoft-centric stack, we empowered the client’s internal teams to manage the system more independently, reducing reliance on specialised external support and enabling faster, data-backed decision-making.
