MTS Projects in Sweden

MTS collaborated with Zeppelin, a Caterpillar dealer in Sweden, to optimise the implementation and utilisation of a Fleet Management System (FMS) at a large iron ore mine. This project focused on integrating complex mining technology into the site’s daily operational workflows, ensuring that the recently installed system was fully embedded into core business processes rather than functioning as a standalone tool.

Technical Scope and Configuration

The project involved the refinement of key FMS processes to improve data accuracy and operational control. Technical focus areas included the configuration and maintenance of the Cat MineStar Fleet mine model, which serves as the foundation for automated system decisions. MTS worked to refine automatic assignment logic, ensuring the system could effectively manage haulage cycles and reduce equipment queuing. Additionally, the scope included the integration of high-precision GPS guidance for ore control and loading operations, alongside the implementation of specialised and customised fueling management to track and optimise fuel consumption across the fleet.

Structured Training and Mentoring

A central component of the engagement was the delivery of targeted training programs for various operational roles. Unlike generic vendor offerings, the MTS mining technology training was conducted by personnel with direct mining experience, focusing on the practical application of the FMS in a high-pressure environment.

  • Controllers and Dispatchers: Training centered on real-time optimisation, shift management, and the use of system data to make immediate tactical adjustments.

  • Operators and Pit Crews: Instruction focused on system compliance, ensuring that data entered at the source—such as delay codes and material types—was accurate and timely.

  • Supervisors: Mentoring sessions helped leadership bridge the gap between digital dashboard metrics and physical field conditions to improve decision-making.

Reporting and Operational Analytics

To ensure long-term sustainability, MTS developed a reporting framework that transformed raw FMS data into actionable insights. This included the creation of benchmarking reports that allowed the operation to measure performance against industry standards and historical internal data. By establishing these automated reporting structures, the site was able to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and identify bottlenecks in the haulage cycle. This data-driven approach facilitated continuous improvement, allowing the operation to realize the full benefits of its digital transformation through enhanced productivity and more efficient asset utilisation.
